Aruba has its own beer. Not just a local lager — a fruit beer born from a childhood mango tree, launched during a pandemic with no marketing budget, and brewed by the island's first female brewmaster.
Magic Mango is the creation of Marisol Heronimo, Aruba's first female brewmaster. She spent eight years in Balashi's quality control lab before trading biochemistry for brewmaster school in Berlin. She came back with an idea rooted in childhood — a mango tree in the yard, fruit falling on the roof, the smell of the island in the morning. The beer launched during Covid with no fanfare, no launch event, just bottles hitting shelves and word spreading. It became the island's fastest-growing beer on merit alone.
Balashi calls it an Aruban Pale Ale, and also an Aruban Flavored Lager — both, depending on the audience. The truth is somewhere in between. Built on the same lager foundation as the flagship Balashi Pilsner, it drinks clean and light, the mango well integrated rather than sitting on top of the beer. Balashi named it after the island rather than fitting it into an existing style category — a geographic assertion more than a brewing classification. This is ours. It comes from here.
The nose is fresh mango, straightforward and honest. The palate is refreshing, the finish clean, hops mild. It's thin, which is exactly right for the climate. No awards. No style category that quite fits. Just a beer the island claimed as its own — and kept asking for until the brewery had no choice but to make it year-round.
