Tasting Note
Tynt Meadow
English Trappist Ale · Mount Saint Bernard Abbey
Charnwood Forest, Leicestershire, England
Mount Saint Bernard Abbey has stood in Leicestershire's Charnwood Forest since 1835 — the first permanent monastery in England since the Reformation. For nearly 180 years the Cistercians farmed: 40 men, 200 acres, 80 cows. When milk prices collapsed, they looked to the Trappist brewing traditions of Belgium for guidance, then made something entirely their own — English malt, English hops, English yeast, water from beneath the ground they'd worked for generations. In 2018 they released Tynt Meadow, and became the only Authentic Trappist brewery in England. It is, unmistakably, an English Ale.
Sight
Deep mahogany with a warm red undertone, nearly opaque, ruby at the edges. A creamy ivory head settles slowly, fine-bubbled.
Smell
Dark chocolate first, then the grain emerges beneath — English malt, grounded, without the spice-forward character of Belgian yeast. Subtle aromatics that invite you closer.
Taste
Sweet malt leads, then dark chocolate emerges — not bright cocoa, but something deeper, roasted and serious. The palate is clean and composed, neither fruit-driven nor hoppy. It leans toward Belgian strong dark territory. As the glass warmed, a toffee sweetness began to surface, adding another dimension to the close.
Mouthfeel
Substantial body, fine unified carbonation. The 7.4% registers as warmth rather than heat. The faint dryness of chocolate without heaviness — the mouth simply feels complete.
Finish
Long, earthy, dark chocolate with a quiet hop-driven sting on the tongue. It fades slowly, taking its time.
Tynt Meadow is not a Belgian beer. It doesn't try to be. Shaped by English malt, English yeast, and English restraint, it occupies its own quiet territory — without the bright ester lift that Belgian tradition trades in. What it offers instead is gravity. A beer that asks you to slow down, sit with it, and let the finish do its work.
